DESCRIPTION: Wing length ranging from 9.2mm. A mid-sized species of dung fly with large orange-brown eyes. Males are noticeably yellow with a golden pubescence and dusting. Females are darker with a blue-grey head and thorax and an orange-grey abdomen with darkened bases and hind edges to the tergites.. The legs and antennae of both sexes are orange and the arista plumose. The wings are yellow tinged, especially around the costa. This is one Dung Fly of a tough complex and microscopy is needed to confirm full identification. BEHAVIOUR: Usually seen feeding on dung.  DISTRIBUTION: A widespread species throughout Britain. HABITAT: Pond edges and wet meadows. PERIOD: March to September.
